Guinea Pig Adoption Requirements

North Idaho Guinea Pig Rescue prioritizes the long-term welfare of every guinea pig in our care. Our adoption policies are designed to ensure safe, appropriate, and permanent placements, including the consideration of bonded pairs. We also adhere to specific housing requirements and provide necessary veterinary care to support each guinea pig's well-being throughout the guinea pig adoption process.

Guinea pigs are social animals that thrive in bonded pairs or groups, aligning with our adoption policies. Single guinea pig adoptions are only approved in rare cases where medical necessity is evident. We do not support adopting guinea pigs as companions for unknown single pigs without proper bonding guidance and consideration of their housing requirements and veterinary care.

All adopters must adhere to our adoption policies by providing appropriate housing for their guinea pigs. Minimum housing requirements include: 

- C&C cages or equivalent are strongly preferred. 

- The housing must meet the minimum space requirements based on the number of guinea pigs, especially for bonded pairs. 

- Pet store cages are not accepted as primary housing. 

The cage setup must be: 

- Clean, secure, and properly sized. 

- Fully prepared before adoption to ensure the well-being of the guinea pigs, including their veterinary care. 

We may request photos prior to approval.

Adopters must adhere to specific adoption policies which include providing: Unlimited grass hay as the primary diet, high-quality pellets without dyes, fresh vegetables daily (including sources of vitamin C), and clean water at all times. It's important to note that guinea pig adoption often involves caring for bonded pairs, so understanding their housing requirements is essential. Additionally, basic care knowledge and awareness of veterinary care are required before adoption.

Adoption policies for guinea pig adoption require that adopters must: have access to an exotics veterinarian and be willing and financially prepared to provide necessary veterinary care. Additionally, guinea pigs often thrive better in bonded pairs, and it's important to understand their housing requirements, especially when they require specialized veterinary treatment when ill.

All adopters must complete an application in accordance with our adoption policies. We reserve the right to approve or deny any application based on overall suitability, including considerations for bonded pairs and housing requirements, rather than the order received. Additionally, we emphasize the importance of proper veterinary care for all adopted guinea pigs.

Adopters must ensure that all household members are aware of and agree to the adoption policies related to guinea pig adoption. Additionally, it is important to confirm that living situations, including rentals, meet the housing requirements for guinea pigs, especially if planning to adopt bonded pairs. Regular veterinary care should also be considered to ensure the well-being of the pets.

Guinea pigs can live 5–7+ years, making guinea pig adoption a long-term commitment. It's important to understand adoption policies, including the need for bonded pairs, to ensure these social animals thrive. Additionally, prospective owners should be aware of housing requirements and the necessity for regular veterinary care.
